What are the requirements for Dangerous Goods Signage?

You are required to have the relevant Dangerous Goods Signage, otherwise known as placards, installed in entry ways to alert people to the chemicals and hazards in that area. You should install compliant Dangerous Goods Signs in areas that store, handle or manufacture dangerous goods.

Are there different dangerous goods class signs?

Yes. For every class and division of dangerous goods, there is a corresponding Dangerous Goods Sign. These signs are in the shape of a diamond and are required under law. All dangerous goods classes from Class 1 Explosives to Class 9 Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods have an applicable sign, with extra signs required for sub risks and divisions.

How do I know what signage to use?

Refer to your safety data sheet and the applicable Australian Standard to determine the Dangerous Goods Signs and Safety Signs required for your workplace. You must always placard your workplace with the relevant Dangerous Goods Diamond. You may also be required to add additional Hazard Signage to alert people of hazards in the area, such as ‘No Smoking, No Ignition Source’ signs or ‘Corrosive Material’ signs.
